Design & RFQ checklist

From drawing to a manufacturable ceramic part

Prepare the dimensions, process requirements and acceptance criteria that make a custom-part discussion productive.

1. Send a controlled drawing

A dimensioned drawing makes the enquiry easier to assess than a photograph alone. Add a 3D model when it helps describe complex geometry.

  • Include drawing number, revision, units and required quantity.
  • Identify material or describe the application if the grade is not yet selected.
  • Mark datum surfaces, critical dimensions, fits, threads and mating parts.
  • State flatness, parallelism, roughness and edge/chamfer requirements where they matter.

2. Understand the manufacturing sequence

Typical ceramic manufacturing proceeds through powder preparation, forming, green machining where appropriate, sintering and final finishing. The route depends on the material and geometry.

  • Forming establishes the basic shape; pressing, casting and other methods suit different geometries.
  • Green machining can introduce features before the ceramic reaches its final hardness.
  • Sintering densifies the material; shrinkage must be accounted for in the process design.
  • Final grinding, lapping, polishing or drilling provides the required finished features.

3. Focus precision where it performs a function

Unnecessary tight tolerances can add finishing and inspection work. Explain which surfaces control sealing, alignment, heat transfer or assembly.

  • Separate critical functional dimensions from general dimensions.
  • Describe whether a surface is a sealing face, sliding face, bonding surface or cosmetic surface.
  • Discuss thin walls, small holes, sharp internal corners and unsupported edges early.
  • Confirm inspection methods and sampling with the quotation, not after delivery.

4. Add the application and commercial context

The same drawing can require a different grade or inspection plan in a different environment.

  • Give operating temperature, atmosphere, medium and mechanical/electrical duty.
  • Share current failure mode and any required validation test.
  • Separate prototype quantity from expected repeat orders.
  • Provide the delivery destination and target schedule for quotation review.
