Product Description
Silicon nitride bearing balls are lightweight, hard, electrically insulating rolling elements for high-speed and electrically sensitive bearing systems.
Silicon nitride bearing balls run between bearing raceways to carry load while allowing rotation. They are used in hybrid bearings with steel rings and in selected all-ceramic designs. This page covers individual balls, not a complete bearing assembly.
Their low density reduces rolling-element inertia and centrifugal loading compared with steel balls. High stiffness, low thermal expansion and electrical insulation make them useful in spindle bearings, electric motors and compact high-speed mechanisms.
Finished precision balls require both dimensional control and bearing-grade material integrity. Nominal diameter, spherical form, surface texture and defect limits are separate from the load, speed, lubrication and life requirements of the complete bearing.
Product Features
- Low mass for high-speed rotation: Lower density than bearing steel reduces centrifugal loading from the rolling elements, supporting high-speed bearing designs.
- Electrical insulation: Insulating rolling elements interrupt current paths through the ball-to-raceway contacts, helping address electrical erosion in suitable hybrid-bearing designs.
- Hardness and stiffness: A hard, stiff rolling surface resists wear and deformation; bearing contact geometry and surface integrity remain important under load.
- Low thermal expansion: The balls expand less than steel with temperature, giving bearing designers another way to manage thermal behaviour and internal clearances.
- Corrosion-resistant rolling elements: Si₃N₄ offers an option for chemically demanding service when the rings, cage and lubrication are also selected for the environment.
Typical Applications
- Machine-tool spindle bearings: low-mass rolling elements for high-speed precision rotation
- Electric-motor and generator hybrid bearings: electrically insulating balls to interrupt current paths through rolling contacts
- Dental handpieces and other compact high-speed instruments
- Specialist pumps and process equipment using corrosion-resistant bearing designs

Product Geometry & Configuration
| Product parameter | Configuration | Acceptance basis |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery form | Finished precision ball or oversize blank | A blank requires further finishing before rolling-contact service |
| Ball diameter | Nominal diameter and lot size variation | Sets bearing geometry and ball matching |
| Precision grade | Diameter variation, spherical form and surface texture | Grade designation is paired with its governing standard and edition |
| Material quality | Bearing-grade Si₃N₄ with surface-defect and lot controls | Separate from dimensional precision and generic structural Si₃N₄ properties |
| Bearing system | Hybrid steel-ring or specified all-ceramic arrangement | Load, speed and life belong to the complete bearing design |
Precision-Ball Specification Terms
Separate material quality from dimensional precision. A nominal diameter or grade number alone does not describe the full rolling-element acceptance specification.
| Parameter | Meaning | Specification guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal diameter | Target ball size with units | Distinguish a finished rolling element from an oversize blank. |
| Diameter variation | Variation on an individual ball and across a lot | State which limit applies and the agreed measurement and lot definition. |
| Spherical form | Departure of the surface from an ideal sphere | Specify the governing standard/edition and inspection method. |
| Surface texture | Roughness parameter and surface-defect acceptance | Roughness and pits, cracks or other defects are different inspection questions. |
| Material and traceability | Si₃N₄ material specification and identified production lot | Include required material evidence, inspection records and matching/sorting instructions. |
Ball grade is a precision designation, not a standalone bearing speed, load or life rating. Those depend on the complete bearing system and operating duty.
Available Forms
Individual silicon nitride rolling elements are shown in different relative sizes. Specify nominal diameter, ball grade and inspection requirements independently of the complete bearing assembly.
- Individual finished balls
- Blanks for further processing
- Sorted or matched lot requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these complete ceramic bearings?
No. This page covers individual silicon nitride balls. A complete bearing also includes rings, a cage and other assembly-specific components. Specify the complete assembly separately if that is your requirement.
How should I specify the ball grade?
Include the grade designation, governing standard and edition, and the critical diameter, spherical-form and surface requirements. Provide the drawing or existing procurement specification when available.
Does ceramic automatically mean longer bearing life?
Service performance depends on the complete bearing and duty. Load, speed, contact geometry, material quality, lubrication and contamination must be considered together.
